Description

300 Years of Freemasonry through the Prism of the History of Globe Lodge

Globe Lodge was constituted in 1723, just six years after the meeting at the Goose and Gridiron in London at which the first Grand Lodge was formed, and in September 2023 it celebrated 300 years of continuous working. It is one of the nineteen ‘Red Apron’ Lodges with the privilege of nominating a member for the office of Grand Steward.

Over its lifetime the Lodge has had more than 1,200 members, many of whom played an active and influential role not only within the Lodge but in Freemasonry generally, and some of whom made a considerable impact on the world outside the Craft. The Lodge has weathered the odd scandal, one of which nearly caused it to fold, and Richard L. Gan and Archie Walls tell its story with candour, using it as a lens on three centuries of English Freemasonry.
